Dear all beloved CLC members

On behalf of our national formation team, I send you our prayers and best wishes for a year that brings you the blessings of good health and peace.  The past 3 years brought enormous challenges, changes and adaptations to the way of life that we knew.  Some experienced the loss of loved ones, health issues for ourselves, financial losses, employment losses and challenges, and all of us experienced huge changes in our way of life. Our beloved CLC could not escape those changes and impact.   For most of 2020 no groups could physically meet, some could manage some online gatherings, some via WhatsApp, some lost members, and all struggled.   We thank God that so many of our members continued to experience the loving presence of God with us, near us in the difficult times.  For many the gift of CLC, the growing awareness of God’s loving presence with us in good and bad times carried us through.

The desire of the formation team is to give you, our members, an opportunity to continue the discovery, or rediscover the grace and joy of encountering the presence of God in our daily lives.  To help us come up with a relevant growth, or formation programme we are asking you to complete the attached short questionnaire to help us get a picture of where our members are in this new year.  As we begin this journey let me introduce the formation team.  The work on formation was severely disrupted by covid, and then in 2022 World CLC hosted a Global Formation Encounter in Manresa and I was given the opportunity to attend.  I am so excited to really re-energise our formation programme and there is a great team ready and willing to work on this crucial aspect of CLC.

The team is me, as co-ordinator, Kaye Henrick, and the experienced and enthusiastic members Sabie Makgothi, Jill Mckay, Colleen Callahan, Mandy Jones, and Clara Klitsie.Our desire is to serve you and facilitate you in discovering the beauty, joy and value of our CLC way of life.

By the way, there are no right or wrong answers to the questionnaire.  Every answer, from every person, however short or long time in CLC is important. We would also like members with whom you are in contact but are not currently attending meetings to complete the questionnaire and return it to us.

Christmas Message from our National Coordinator

Christmas 2022
On the very Eve of this wonderous celebration, the birth of our savior, one has to wonder about the
secular celebration. It has made me wonder why we so easily lose focus on the reason for the
season, a season that often gets caught up in expensive gifts and stress. I pray that we as CLC SA
are still on the path of remembering that Jesus Christ is the reason why we have this feast.

Updates from the National Exco
The National Exco sends its greetings to the wider community as we move into the season of spring here in
South Africa. We hope it brings movements of new life into our small groups and wider community! Below are
a few key items on the national community agenda that we would invite you to please reflect upon:
Discernment around new members to National Exco
As you are all aware the National Exco is now functioning with 4 members instead of 6 plus as has been the
norm over recent years. In addition, current terms will be coming to an end over the next year or two, beginning
from January 2023 and not all members can commit to continuing. We are thus in urgent need to build the
National Exco through representation from all regions. Please make this discernment a priority in your personal
prayer, small community life, and regional structures.
While in the long term this may lead to discernment around regional-based representation, shorter term
solutions are also required. This means the National Exco may have to co-opt members to serve but these coopted members are not elected and don’t have full voting rights on the committee so we’d hope to avoid this
for the core committee (rather than additional roles as it has been used for in the past).

Feast of St. Ignatius: 31st July

The feast of St Ignatius will soon be upon us, and we invite you to consider how you would like to
mark this occasion with your local or regional groups. It is a wonderful occasion to prompt a get
together – whether that be having a group meeting after a long break, or meeting together for a
meal. A few years ago, I heard a homily by Fr Matthew Power SJ where, as I recall, he spoke of the
wonder of the fact that when Ignatius experienced God in such a personal and grace-filled way
Ignatius’ response was to understand that encounter as being about who God is, not about who he
was. It was this insight that led to his life-long desire to help others to know this God. As we prepare
for this feast, I invite you to consider who God reveals Godself to be to you in this moment of your
life – and in what small ways you can share that God with those around you.
